EV charging cost questions, answered

How much does it cost to charge an EV in Canada?

A typical EV uses about 17.4 kWh per 100 km. At Canadian home rates ranging from roughly 7¢/kWh (Quebec) to 14¢/kWh (Ontario off-peak) and higher in other provinces, driving 20,000 km a year costs between about $250 and $500 in electricity — compared with $2,000–$3,000 to fuel an average gas SUV the same distance. Use the calculator above for your province's exact rates.

Is it cheaper to charge an EV at home or at public stations?

Home charging is almost always cheaper. Canadian public DC fast charging typically runs 35–62¢/kWh — roughly 2 to 4× residential off-peak rates. Fast charging makes sense on road trips; the daily routine should run on home or workplace Level 2 charging.

How much cheaper is an EV per year than a gas car?

On fuel alone, Canadian drivers covering 20,000 km a year typically save 60–80% versus an average gas SUV — often $1,500–$2,500 a year — depending on province electricity rates and pump prices. Maintenance savings add more: EVs skip oil changes and have fewer moving parts.

Do EV charging costs change by province?

Yes — significantly. Quebec's flat ~7¢/kWh residential rate makes it Canada's cheapest province for EV charging, while provinces like Alberta and Nova Scotia with higher or deregulated rates narrow the gap with gasoline. Pick your province above or open a province page for full rate tables.
