Volvo's EX30 Power-Bank Update Skips Canada — What EX30 Owners Here Actually Get

Volvo Cars has begun rolling out a software update that turns the EX30 — its smallest and most affordable electric SUV — into what the company calls a power bank on wheels. Drivers in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America can now run laptops, coffee makers, campsite gear or a home fridge during an outage straight off the car's battery. Canadian EX30 drivers cannot: the vehicle-to-load (V2L) function is explicitly unavailable in Canada, as well as the United States, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan and Japan, per the update's rollout details reported by Electrek on September 1.

What the update delivers where it is available

The core feature is bidirectional charging. With a separate adapter connected to the charge port, the EX30 can deliver up to 3 kW at 16 amps to external devices. Volvo says the system can power "a wide range of everyday equipment," and automatically cuts off the external supply when the battery drops below 20 percent to preserve driving charge. In the markets where it works, the function uses the CCS2 charging standard.

The same over-the-air package also refreshes the EX30's interface with a customizable contextual bar and a redesigned settings menu — those changes do reach Canadian cars.

The part Canadians and Americans miss

V2L has quietly become a checklist item for affordable EVs, which makes the omission sting. The feature is what lets an EV double as backup power during the ice storms and outages that hit Canadian provinces every winter — a use case Quebec and Ontario owners of rivals already enjoy. Electrek notes that entry competitors are filling the gap: the 2027 Kia EV3, which starts at about $30,000 in the United States, ships with standard V2L.

Volvo's Canadian EX30 business adds context to the decision. Volvo has already announced it is discontinuing the EX30 in the United States after the 2026 model year, as Electrek reported in March, and the Canadian market rides on the same North American product decisions. The EX30 continues elsewhere with CCS2 ports — the connector standard Volvo's V2L adapter is built around — while North American cars use NACS-era charging architecture the adapter does not support.

Plug & Charge: Europe only, for now

A second headline feature from the update — Plug & Charge, which lets drivers plug in at compatible public stations and authenticate automatically without a card or app — is rolling out only in certain European markets, and only on 2026 model-year or newer EX30s. Canadian drivers keep tapping cards or using network apps for now.

What Canadian EX30 owners should take from this

• Watch for the OTA anyway: the contextual-bar interface refresh and settings redesign do ship to Canada — a modest but real improvement.
• Do not buy an imported V2L adapter: the function is region-locked in software, not just missing the hardware dongle.
