Tesla has significantly expanded the service area of its driverless Robotaxi fleet in Dallas. The official Tesla Robotaxi account announced the geofence upgrade on X on Aug. 29, confirming that the autonomous taxis can now reach more parts of the Texas city — the latest in a rapid series of expansions since the unmanned service opened to the public in January.
The Dallas upgrade follows other recent enhancements: days earlier Tesla announced longer operating hours across several cities — now 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. — alongside a larger unsupervised fleet and an upgraded vehicle-distribution engine that the company says reduces customer wait times.
Where Robotaxi runs today
Tesla now operates Robotaxis in six cities: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. In the San Francisco Bay Area the service continues to run with a safety driver behind the wheel under the terms of its local permit. Las Vegas granted approval for only 10 vehicles — far short of the 5,000 Tesla requested. Each new geofence expansion like Dallas's matters because it grows the real-world mileage collected by the unsupervised fleet, the data engine that eventually unlocks new markets.
Canada: watching, waiting, hiring?
None of that mileage is being driven in Canada. Tesla has not launched Robotaxi north of the border, and Canadian regulators have not approved unsupervised operation. But recent job postings on Tesla's careers site suggest Canada — along with South America — is the next frontier the company is preparing for, even as provincial rules and federal vehicle-safety law lag behind the U.S. states that greenlit the service.
