Winnipeg's Bison Transport Is Testing the Tesla Semi in Chicago

One of Canada's best-known trucking fleets is putting Tesla's electric Class 8 truck through its paces. Bison Transport, the Winnipeg-based carrier founded in 1969, has confirmed it is currently testing the Tesla Semi with its own drivers in the Chicago area — the first public signal that a major Canadian fleet is evaluating battery-electric long-haul trucking south of the border before bringing it home.

The trial is in its early stages. Bison says initial feedback from drivers behind the wheel of the Semi has been positive, and the company is treating the test as a structured evaluation rather than a commitment: the goal is hands-on driver experience plus real-world data on how an electric Class 8 performs under genuine freight conditions, not a headline order.

Bison has left several questions open. The company has not disclosed how many Tesla Semis are involved in the trial, nor where in Canada the trucks might eventually be deployed. What is clear is the logic behind the test: Bison operates throughout Canada and the United States, giving it a wide mix of routes, climates and duty cycles against which an electric truck can be measured — including the harsh winters that shape any business case for electrified freight on the Prairies.

What would move this from test to trend: a confirmed Canadian deployment, disclosed fleet numbers, and the first dedicated Megacharger-style charging site on a Prairie corridor. None of those exists yet — Bison, for now, is simply gathering kilometres and driver impressions.
